We officially look like a state of intolerant fools. My excuse for not campaigning vigorously against Prop 8 was that I was totally focused on helping Obama's campaign. After all, it'll be useful to have a president who is a constitutional scholar, and does not support Prop 8 despite misleading ads to the contrary. He supports "civil unions" (with equal legal benefits of marriage) instead of "gay marriage," which is a compromise of semantics for people who have unfounded fears that lack of a distinction will somehow impact their way of life. FUD spread by proponents of Prop 8 convinced just enough Californians to nuke the civil rights of an entire demographic. This concerns me as a Californian and Japanese-American whose parents did not always have the equal rights that I have enjoyed my entire life. The return of legalized discrimination is a dangerous precedent that threatens the very foundation of our civil liberties.
